Statement: Medicinal Cannabis

By March 4, 2016Health

The Ministry of Health is aware of a recent sentencing decision in a case involving the importation of medicinal cannabis products.

Whatever individual circumstances may have been considered by the judge in this case, it does not affect the current legal status regarding the importation of cannabis.

That is, it is still unlawful to import cannabis (including cannabis medications) into New Zealand without proper approval under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 and/or the Medicines Act 1981.

Claims by some of those involved in the case that it is now possible to import unauthorised products prescribed abroad are incorrect.
